The Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe Prehistoric Rock Art Trails offers in Spain more than 100 major archaeological cave destinations of great scientific, cultural, artistic and archaeological interest, all of them open to the knowledge and enjoyment of European and world society. Currently, more than 2 million visitors come every year to the sites where the first inhabitants of our species created their transcendental Rock Art, an art full of symbolism motivated by spiritual beliefs and full of references to Nature, which formed the first Cultural Landscapes of the Iberian Peninsula.

The vast majority of these sites incorporate a great deal of symbolic capital and are part of the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes. PRAT-CARPIn addition, four rock art sites in Spain are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Altamira Cave and Palaeolithic Rock Art of Northern Spain, Cave Art of the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula, Siega Verde Prehistoric Rock Art site (together with the neighbouring enclave of Côa Valley in Portugal) and Cultural Landscape of the Risco Caído and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria.

Therefore, Spain contributes to Europe's cultural tourism offer with some of the most unique rock art destinations on the continent, including archaeological sites, museums, interpretation centres and archaeological/cultural parks. Many of these destinations are small sites (a cave, a shelter, an open-air rock, a small interpretation centre...), but there are places with important tourist infrastructures where it is possible to visit large archaeological sites with spectacular artistic expressions, such as Ekainberri, Altamira, Tito Bustillo, Teverga, Campo Lameiro, Green Mowing, MaltraviesoDolmen de Soto, Minateda, Villar del HumoCoats of El Pozo de Calasparra, Bicorp , Painted Cave of Gáldar, Cultural Parks of the Martin Rivers y VeroAlbarracín, La Valltorta-Gasullaetc., etc. Up to 15 routes have been designed in Spain to discover the first art of humanity and the incredible landscapes -underground and open-air- in which it is located.

Cantabrian caves, Galician petroglyphs, shelters and rocks of the Meseta and the Mediterranean Arc... The first (cave) art galleries of Humanity are open to you in Spain; come and discover them!
